The language

The Azores like its parent country Portugal speak Portuguese. However most people in tourist and commercial sites can speak English as can younger people throughout the country. Portugal being quite small compared to many European countries, is perhaps more inclined to speak English than many, and some argue that it is unnecessary to learn Portuguese in order to visit or do business in Portugal, or its territories. Many people from Britain and elsewhere have also retired there into English speaking communities and have not learnt the language.

Although many of the people of Portugal may be able to communicate with you in English, their language ability and experience will vary, and for this reason if you anticipate a lot of time spent in either the Azores or Portugal learning the language may be a good idea. In addition some English and American business people have discovered being able to understand a language although not speaking it to others knowledge can lead to insights that help them.

The rest of this page is mostly internet links, many to do with the language, but some also general information sites that may be of interest.
