From eggs to resorts

Domes have more strength, are easier to construct, lighter, use less materials and can be used in many ways.

As a self supporting shape we know large spaces can be covered, and the strength, it can be structurally sound while intact and needs to be only very thin. The best example being the chickens egg, which although breakable, is extremely thin, and if you were to weigh a shell compared with the egg as a whole you would find a very small percentage of the whole weight of the structure.

You can find many sites on the internet relating to building domes from very effective homes to large sporting stadiums.  Many can be found from www.domebuilders.com  which is a Dome builders directory, with everything to do with dome building from builders to explanations on how to build domes.  A builder of large and small dome structures with a web site that shows what can be achieved can be found at www.monolithicdome.com

The idea of a large stable sea dome may appeal, just imagine a round or oval island, with a large dome providing extra protection, perhaps open to the south, perhaps containing a large garden, trees, fruit of all types, flowers, lawns, a bubbling brook and waterfall, and house at one end, perhaps made as another dome structure built into the end. The dome could be constructed of a mixture of materials, perhaps Ferrocement, with glass or plastic panels.

The advantage are stability, low build cost, weather protection, possibly even being able to be completely sealed.

OK the idea is not unique there are others with plans to build colonies or small towns in shallow water around existing islands using such structures.

In our situation, where we are generally looking at larger islands, more solid structures, and out in the center of the Atlantic, we envisage many different types and shapes of structures, perhaps some would see islands that look more like cruise ships, with towering walls, a solid box structure, others may see an open plan approach with a large island space, and a number of smaller structures, many will see something in between.

We see the potential for constructions based on dome designs as part of this in between group, not necessarily as stand alone units, but perhaps complexes that are built using dome design features, perhaps with a number of floors, and structures within structures.

Perhaps offices, resort buildings, casinos, theatres, food production or gardens, there are so many opportunities, for dome designs to be considered.

We are not attempting to tell you that a dome design is ideal for you, perhaps all that we are saying is look at the economics, island structures involving domes can be produced at very low cost, perhaps for some this will make the idea of building one for the kingdom a practical idea. Look at the materials that could be used, perhaps its cheaper to build a larger island than to build high, after all we are not going to run out of ocean.
