Hurricanes

Season for the Caribbean and western Atlantic is June to November inclusive. Most occur in August, September or October.

Hurricanes are large storms with intense rain and winds, that move in a circular motion around a high pressure zone, in this case located between the Azores and Bermuda.

Most pass to the west of Bermuda but some do occasionally hit it, the worst was in 1780 when 50 ships were driven ashore, and some houses were destroyed. Today building regulations mean that little damage is done to property, and the major effect is the loss of power for periods, sometimes lasting days. The major problem this presents is in pumping water then from underground tanks.
