Introduction

From the OTEC process we get many bi products including a sludge that contains Gold, Platinum and many other metals and chemicals, some of which may be able to be separated and used.

Protein as a food source

In addition to the sludge we have another potential bi product protein, the figures we have may be for warmer and shallower water than we are looking to be based in, however as a topic for thought we will quote what we have been told.

Each 100 megawatt OTEC can cause the development of 8 tons of protein a day, of which about 65% will be quality protein.

The basis of this is that sea water contains 1.7 to 1.8 milligrams of nitrogen, the food of phytoplankton, which is very efficient and can convert around 80% of it, into usable protein.

The United Nations says that a person needs 35 grams of protein a day, so this, if it was converted to edible form could feed 150,000 people a day per 100 megawatt OTEC. In practice it is far more likely to be able to be used as fish food, and for feeding chickens and farm animals for conversion into food forms we find more appealing. There is however great scope for development and as a form of disaster relief. Research may also find ways of making it attractive as a food source to us all as well.

In the longer term this could be a major export from the floating kingdom.
